Semiotic Analysis of Billboard Music Magazine



Masthead - The masthead of this music magazine is called 'Billboard' which appeals to the target audience which are older teens - young adults, as the name suggests about music and about the charts. The masthead is also covered up by the cover model which suggests that the magazine is very popular that all the masthead doesn't need to be shown. The colours used are very bold and not that colourful as the main colour used is black with a bit of blue and yellow. This is because the colour black stands out better against the colourful pink and also the colour black appeals more to the target audience as they are older teens - young adults.


Central Image - The central image stands out very much on the front cover as the model is wearing black which matches with the font colour and stands out from the pink background. The cover model is dressed quite girly and is a well known pop artist.


Cover Model - The cover model of this edition of Billboard magazine is Katy Perry, a well known pop artist. She would appeal to the target audience as she is very popular and relates to the magazine. She is wearing an unusual outfit which makes her stand out more and relates to the anchored text. Her outfit also is very girly and feminine and she is posed in a innocent but sexualised way. By using Katy Perry as their cover model, they would get many buyer.


Anchorage - The anchored message 'KATY PERRY- inside the court of the new queen of pop' relates to the cover model and explains what the article/picture is about. Her name is in bold which makes the article stand out more and make readers directly look at the picture.


Coverlines - The coverlines of this edition of Billboard relates mainly to music and advice. There isn't many coverlines as Billboard tend not to use many so that the main article stands out more and makes the photograph also stand out more.
